MoSi2 Heater
The MoSi2 (Molybdenum Disilicide) Heating Element is the gold standard for high-performance resistance heating. Manufactured from high-purity Molybdenum Disilicide, these elements are designed to thrive where other materials fail.
The secret lies in their unique reaction to heat. When exposed to high temperatures in an oxidizing atmosphere, a compact layer of quartz glass (SiO2) forms on the element’s surface. This “self-healing” skin hermetically seals the material, making it highly resistant to oxidation even during continuous operation. While the optimal working range sits between 500°C and 1700°C, standard models can push to 1800°C, making them indispensable for high-temperature metallurgy and glass production.
Key Features of MoSi2 Heater
- Extreme Temperature Range: Capable of operating up to 1800°C in air, making them ideal for the most demanding sintering and melting applications.
- Self-Healing Surface: If the protective silica layer is scratched or damaged, it naturally “heals” itself by reforming a new glass layer at high temperatures (approx. 1000°C).
- Versatile Geometries: Available in standard U-Shape and W-Shape (3-phase), as well as Spiral and Bent configurations to fit tight furnace chambers.
- Stable Electrical Properties: Unlike SiC elements that increase in resistance over time (aging), MoSi2 maintains constant electrical resistance. This means you don’t need to constantly adjust your power supply voltage as the element gets older.
- Rapid Thermal Cycling: Can handle fast heating and cooling rates without thermal shock failure, boosting your production throughput.
Advantages of MoSi2 Heater
- No “Aging” Effect: Because their resistance doesn’t change significantly with use, you can mix old and new elements in the same furnace without causing power imbalances. Consequently, maintenance is simpler and cheaper.
- Long Service Life: The protective quartz layer makes them virtually immune to oxidation. Therefore, they last significantly longer than metallic alloys in high-temperature air environments.
- High Power Density: MoSi2 elements can accept a very high surface load (Watt loading). As a result, you can concentrate a massive amount of energy into a small furnace chamber for rapid heating.
- Easy Replacement: In many furnace designs, these elements can be replaced while the furnace is still hot, minimizing expensive production downtime.
- Clean Process: They produce no carbon or metallic dust, making them perfect for firing sensitive materials like Zirconia (dental crowns), optical glass, and semiconductors.
Uses & Applications of MoSi2 Heater
- Laboratory Furnaces: Essential for tube and box furnaces used in materials research.
- Dental Sintering: The standard heating source for sintering Zirconia dental bridges and crowns.
- Glass Manufacturing: Used in feeder channels and forehearths for precise temperature control of molten glass.
- Ceramics Industry: Sintering advanced technical ceramics, ferrites, and capacitors.
- Semiconductor Industry: Wafer processing and crystal growing furnaces.
- Powder Metallurgy: High-temperature sintering of metal powders.
